The Magpie

Claude Monet

Painted
1868–69
Collection
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

A single magpie sits on a gate in a snow-covered countryside. Monet painted the shadows on the snow in blue rather than black; the Salon jury rejected the picture, but it later came to be seen as an early statement of the Impressionist treatment of light. It is the most famous of his 140 or so snow scenes.
