Isle of the Dead (third version)
Arnold Böcklin
A rocky island crowned with cypresses rises from still water as a boat with a white-robed figure and a coffin approaches. Böcklin painted the island five times after a commission for "a picture to dream over", and in early twentieth-century Germany a print of it hung in almost every home. Rachmaninoff wrote a symphonic poem after seeing it.
