Attersee

Gustav Klimt

Painted
1900
Collection
Leopold Museum, Vienna

The rippling water of the Attersee in Austria fills almost the whole square canvas, leaving only a thin strip of island and far shore along the top edge. Klimt framed the view as if cutting it out with a telescope from a boat, and dabbed in each ripple with short strokes until the water shimmers like a mosaic.
