A flamenco performance that Sargent drew from his travels in Spain, shown at the Paris Salon of 1882. Footlights catch the dancer from below as she arches back in a sweeping white skirt, while the guitarists and clapping onlookers along the wall throw large, flickering shadows onto the plaster. Isabella Stewart Gardner later built a Spanish-style cloister in her museum to display it.
