The Floor Scrapers (second version)
Gustave Caillebotte
Two workmen plane down the floorboards of an empty room, seen from a high viewpoint. Caillebotte painted the first version, with three men at work, in 1875 (Musée d'Orsay) and returned to the subject the following year with this second version for two. Light from the window streaks across the polished floor, and the pale stripes of freshly scraped wood and the curls of shavings scattered around the men are painted with great care.
