The Magic Circle
John William Waterhouse
A sorceress traces a circle on the ground with her wand, sealing herself and a boiling cauldron off from the world outside. A column of white smoke rises from the pot, ravens wait beyond the line, and an ancient town stands far off across the parched plain. The smoke and the glow of the fire are the landmarks; the wide ochre ground is matched along the curve of the circle.
