The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit
John Singer Sargent
The four daughters of Edward Darley Boit, an American painter and friend of Sargent, in the hall of the family's Paris apartment. The youngest sits on the rug with a doll, another stands at the left, and the two eldest are half lost in the shadows beside a towering blue-and-white vase. The girls are scattered across the space rather than grouped, which gives the picture an air quite unlike an ordinary family portrait.
