Sandro Botticelli
Venus stands at the centre of an orange grove; on the right the west wind seizes a nymph who turns into Flora, goddess of flowers, while on the left the Three Graces dance and Mercury clears the clouds. Some five hundred identifiable plants grow in the meadow. Painted for the Medici, it is the essence of Renaissance mythology in paint.
