A fresco on the wall of the Pope's library in the Vatican, gathering the philosophers of ancient Greece under one great vault. Plato points to the sky and Aristotle to the earth at the centre, with Pythagoras, Euclid and Diogenes around them, and Raphael slipped his own face into the right-hand corner. It is the Renaissance dream of reason in a single picture.
