View of Delft
Johannes Vermeer
Vermeer's home town seen from across the harbour, one of only two cityscapes he painted. The shadow of a cloud crosses the roofs, sunlight falls only on the tower of the New Church on the right, and boats and walls tremble in their reflections. Proust called it the most beautiful painting in the world.
