Napoleon Crossing the Alps

Jacques-Louis David

Painted
1801
Collection
Belvedere, Vienna

It commemorates Napoleon's crossing of the Great St Bernard Pass into Italy in 1800. He actually rode a mule, but asked to be shown "calm on a fiery horse", and David carved BONAPARTE into the rocks beside the names of Hannibal and Charlemagne. Five versions were painted; this one belongs to the Belvedere in Vienna.
