Painted on a hill at Argenteuil looking up at Monet's wife Camille and their son Jean. The veil and grass blown by the wind and the green light reflected on her face under the parasol were caught in a few hours of quick brushwork; Monet thought of it as an outdoor study rather than a portrait. The brightness and speed of Impressionism are all here.
