The poster for Sarah Bernhardt's 1899 production of Hamlet, in which she played the prince herself. Hamlet stands in a black cloak leaning on his sword, the ghost of his father appears in the frieze at the top, and the drowned Ophelia lies among flowers in the panel at the bottom. The gold title on red, the two small scenes and the green halo are the landmarks; the dark expanse of the cloak is best filled in last.
