Mucha's 1896 poster for Sarah Bernhardt as Marguerite Gautier in La Dame aux Camélias by Dumas fils. Bernhardt stands in a white gown and fur-trimmed cloak against a mauve ground scattered with stars, a white flower in her hair, a camellia blooming at the foot of the sheet and a small hand holding a flower tucked into the upper corner. The lettering bands top and bottom and the camellia are the landmarks; the starry ground is best left for last.
