The poster for Sarah Bernhardt in Victorien Sardou's Gismonda at the Théâtre de la Renaissance; posted on 1 January 1895, it made Mucha famous overnight and won him a six-year contract. Bernhardt, as the Duchess of Athens, stands under a Byzantine mosaic arch with a palm frond, orchids in her hair and a gold cloak over white. In the National Gallery Prague's version the lower part is only loosely brushed; the red title and the arch are the landmarks.
