Painted in the first week of van Gogh's stay at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, from the irises in its garden. Each violet petal is outlined in dark blue and a single white iris at the left lets the composition breathe. The design owes much to Japanese prints; the picture became famous when it set an auction record in 1987.
