Painted at night on the bank of the Rhône at Arles: the Great Bear hangs in the sky and the gaslights of the town stretch in long reflections across the water. Van Gogh told his brother Theo that the night was far more richly coloured than the day. A pair of lovers in the foreground adds human warmth to the vast dark landscape.
