A yellow Christ hangs on the cross in an autumn field near Pont-Aven in Brittany, while three women in traditional dress sit at its foot in prayer. Gauguin based the figure on a carved wooden crucifix in the nearby chapel of Trémalo, and painted the red trees and yellow hills as flat areas of colour inside heavy outlines. The picture reappears in the background of his Self-Portrait with the Yellow Christ, painted soon afterwards.
