Winter in Auscha
Emil Orlik
A snowy street in Auscha (today Úštěk), a small town in northern Bohemia, painted in 1907. A yellow gabled house and a wooden fence fill the centre, people in shawls walk up the hill at left, and a rocky cliff and snowy slope rise behind. Orlik had travelled to Japan to study woodcut, and here too he divides the forms into flat areas of colour; the picture was reproduced in Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration in 1909–10.
