A spiral galaxy some thirty million light-years away in Canes Venatici, its arms so clean that it is the textbook "Whirlpool Galaxy". The small yellow galaxy at the right is passing by and stirring the arms with its gravity, so that new stars are forming in chains along them; the red spots are hydrogen clouds where stars are born.
