The Crab Nebula

Hubble Space Telescope

Painted
2005
Collection
NASA / ESA Hubble Space Telescope

In 1054 Chinese and Arab astronomers recorded a star exploding brightly enough to be seen by day; the Crab Nebula is the wreckage of that supernova. In this Hubble mosaic of twenty-four exposures the orange filaments are the shredded remains of the star, and the blue glow at the centre comes from a neutron star spinning thirty times a second.
