The Sombrero Galaxy (M104)

Hubble Space Telescope

Painted
2003
Collection
NASA / ESA Hubble Space Telescope

A galaxy about twenty-eight million light-years away in Virgo, seen almost edge-on. Its bright bulge and the dark band of dust encircling it resemble a Mexican sombrero. Hubble stitched six exposures together for this view; the galaxy is some fifty thousand light-years across and holds a black hole of a billion solar masses at its centre.
