On Christmas Eve 1968 astronaut William Anders, orbiting the Moon aboard Apollo 8, photographed the Earth rising over the lunar horizon. It was the first time humans had seen their whole planet from outside, and it has been called the photograph that launched the environmental movement. Taken in portrait format, it is usually shown rotated like this.
