The French animal painter Daniel Merlin set two kittens beneath a green vase of yellow daffodils. The picture splits cleanly in two: daffodil yellow above, tabby brown below. Because the colour divides top from bottom, it is one of the easiest pictures here to sort into piles in the tray.
