The mother has settled on a basket spread with red cloth while three kittens are scattered around her. Ronner-Knip collected hundreds of sketches of feline postures and then arranged them, so a picture as casual as this is in fact carefully composed. The red cloth runs across the picture and gives you a line to sort pieces against.
