A tabby seen head-on, painted in 1900. The format is borrowed straight from human portraiture — an empty ground with the sitter placed in the middle — down to the vertical pupils and the roots of the whiskers. The plain background makes it one of the harder pictures here, and also one where the direction of the fur is the whole game.
