Private collection

A snowball fight among village children by Fritz Freund, a German painter born in Darmstadt and trained in Munich. In the foreground a boy in a green-striped cap crouches with a snowball ready, the others wind up to throw on the far side, and a child in a red hood shelters by the wooden hut at left. Cold winter light filtering through the bare trees and quick, loose brushwork give the game its energy.
