Crouching tiger
Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III)
A tiger on a square shikishi sheet by Kunisada, 1830. Japan had no tigers, so artists worked from cats and Chinese paintings, which is why the face looks feline. The direction of the stripes shows which way each piece goes.
