Crane and Pine

Jo Ji-un

Painted
c. 1630
Collection
National Museum of Korea

A single crane stands quietly on the branch of a pine. Jo Ji-un, a seventeenth-century painter, inherited his father Jo Sok's gift for birds and rendered them in restrained ink. Pine and crane are both emblems of long life, so pictures like this were cherished as wishes for health and old age.
