In a jungle lit by lightning a tiger crouches, about to spring on its prey. Rousseau's first jungle painting, with slanting silver streaks for the downpour and layer upon layer of different greens for the leaves. Critics mocked it as childish, but this innocent jungle opened a new door for the painters of the twentieth century.
