Cattle resting on an Alpine meadow, painted in 1885 by Rosa Bonheur, the most celebrated woman painter of the nineteenth century. To draw animals accurately she frequented slaughterhouses and cattle markets, and obtained the police permit a woman then needed to wear trousers. White and red cattle lie on the green.
