Oil on canvas

A still life of 1724 by Oudry, painter to Louis XV: a monkey reaches among flowers and fruit on a stone ledge. He made his name painting the king's hounds and the animals of the royal menagerie, and this is decorative painting at its most lavish. Red fruit, white flowers and the brown monkey mark the dark ground.
