The Girl in the Red Cloak

Warwick Goble

Painted
1911
Collection
Private collection

A watercolour by the English illustrator Warwick Goble for the 1911 Pentamerone. That book, collected by Giambattista Basile in seventeenth-century Naples, holds the oldest surviving versions of Cinderella and Rapunzel. The red cloak on the hill is the only saturated colour against a pale ground, so those are the pieces you reach for first.
