John Bauer is known for illustrating the Swedish annual Among Gnomes and Trolls. As in this scene, where something white — part animal, part person — stands before a boy, his pictures never quite tell you what has been transformed into what. A white shape floating on a dark ground makes the depth of each piece perfectly clear.
