Ivan Bilibin turned the illustration of Russian folk tales into a style of its own. Heavy black outlines filled with flat colour and a border of folk ornament: the recipe came from woodcut, from icons, and from Japanese prints together. The colour areas are broad and their edges sharp, so it is quick to tell where a piece belongs.
