The Garden of Birds

Warwick Goble

Painted
1911
Collection
Private collection

A figure stands in the middle of a garden crowded with flowers and birds. Goble was drawing heavily on East Asian painting at this date, Japanese bird-and-flower work in particular, and here he chose to fill the surface rather than leave it open. The colour is finely scattered, so every piece carries a clue and the picture is a pleasure to build.
