A basket has been tipped over and a tangle of kittens is playing across a red cloth. Van den Eycken painted hundreds of scenes like this, and he never merely prettified them — the joints bend the right way and the weight sits where it should. Three textures, cloth and wicker and fur, make the pieces easy to sort by colour.
