View of Genoa

Jean Baptiste Camille Corot

Painted
1834
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on paper, mounted on canvas

An oil sketch on paper made during Corot's second trip to Italy in 1834, looking down on the harbour of Genoa from a hill. Young Corot made hundreds of these outdoor studies, and their clear light and simple planes are why the Impressionists later called him a father figure. Roofs, sea and sky settle into three fields of colour.
