The Seine at Port-Marly, Piles of Sand

Alfred Sisley

Painted
1875
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

Sand unloaded on the bank of the Seine near Marly, where Sisley lived in 1875, with barges beside it. Sky reflected in the river, white sand and grey boats run horizontally above a low horizon. The river flooded badly the next year, and Sisley painted that too, as a series.
