Cotopaxi, the Andean volcano, painted by the American Hudson River School artist Church after his 1853 journey to Ecuador. He had read the scientist Humboldt and travelled to South America in his footsteps. Palms and a waterfall in the foreground lead in dramatic perspective to the snow-capped cone.
