Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)

Winslow Homer

Painted
1873–76
Collection
National Gallery of Art, Washington

Off Gloucester harbour a fisherman and three boys race a small catboat before the wind. The boy at the tiller gazes toward the horizon and the boat heels as it cuts through the water. Shown at the 1876 Centennial exhibition, it was embraced as an image of a young nation's optimism.
