Two women walk arm in arm along the beach at Skagen, the northern tip of Denmark: the painter Anna Ancher and Krøyer's wife Marie, their white dresses tinted by the blue evening light. It is the classic image of the "blue hour" beloved by the Scandinavian painters who gathered at Skagen, with sky and sea merging into one colour.
