Garden at Sainte-Adresse

Claude Monet

Painted
1867
Collection
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

On a terrace above the Normandy shore Monet's father sits gazing at the sea, flags snap in the wind and a steamer passes in the distance. The division into three bands of terrace, sea and sky, crossed by the verticals of the flagpoles, was learned from Japanese prints, and Monet himself called it his Japanese picture.
