Fishing Boats on the Beach at Saintes-Maries
Vincent van Gogh
Painted during a short trip from Arles to the Mediterranean fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Small boats in bright colours are drawn up on the sand, and van Gogh wrote to his brother that the boats were "as pretty as flowers". Red masts, blue hulls and yellow sand carry the light of the south of France.
