A sea piece by Turner from around 1837: hucksters bargaining with fishermen over the catch, afloat among the waves. Boats and people are barely more than shapes as spray and light swallow the scene. Critics of the day mocked such works as "soapsuds and whitewash"; today they read as a forecast of abstraction.
