The Bay of Marseille, Seen from L'Estaque

Paul Cezanne

Painted
c. 1885
Collection
Art Institute of Chicago
Medium
Oil on canvas

Cézanne painted this view over the Bay of Marseille from L'Estaque, the fishing village where his mother had a house. Orange roofs, deep blue sea and lilac hills stack in horizontal bands, laid down in brick-like strokes. He wrote to Pissarro that the sea here looked "like a playing card set against black silhouettes".
