Dawn on the coast at Trouville in Normandy, 1865. That summer Courbet painted dozens of pictures of nothing but sky and water, opening the genre of the pure seascape; this one adds a cliff. Pale pink sky and grey waves cover wide areas, so it counts as difficult.
