Painted when Monet was twenty-six at Sainte-Adresse, the seaside village near his hometown of Le Havre. Fishing boats hauled onto the sand, a grey sky and white surf are set down in thick strokes. He was broke and living with his father at the time; a few years later the light of this coast would become Impression, Sunrise.
