The Herring Net
Winslow Homer
Two fishermen haul in herring off Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1885. The small boat tilts on the swell, silver fish pour from the net, and larger vessels loom in the fog behind. That year Homer moved to the coast of Maine and painted the sea and its fishermen for the rest of his life.
