Staying in Venice in the autumn of 1908, Monet painted the church and campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore across the lagoon in evening light. Sky and water, both stained orange and violet, run into each other so that the buildings remain only as silhouettes. It is the most intensely coloured of his Venetian series.
